John Boyega has revealed new details regarding the state of the Resistance when we pick up with the sequel trilogy’s heroes in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Lucasfilm made a big splash at Disney’s D23 biennial expo last weekend, offering a new look at Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker which took the internet by storm with the reveal of Daisy Ridley’s Rey wielding a double-bladed red lightsaber. The new look at Episode IX also showed off the heroes of the Resistance including John Boyega and Oscar Isaac. And we even got a glimpse at the Resistance’s new fleet of X-Wings, A-Wings, B-Wings, and Y-Wings after the paramilitary force was all but wiped out in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
While the Resistance appears to have gotten itself back on its feet in time for its last stand against the First Order, John Boyega — better known as ex-Stormtrooper turned Resistance fighter Finn to Star Wars fans — revealed that it’s not going to get any easier for the heroes of the Star Wars universe when he explained to Yahoo the state the Resistance is in when the story picks back up in The Rise of Skywalker one year after Episode VIII:
“The Resistance are broke, they don’t have weapons. Not a lot of allies. You know how they were left after Last Jedi. It’s not a great situation. … Darkness, for the first time in a long time, has taken like 10 million leaps forward.”
John Boyega went on to tease just how challenging that dark threat will be for Rey, Finn, and Poe as they struggle with their own inner demons in the face of the First Order and possibly Emperor Palpatine himself:
“And for us to deal with that as Resistance heroes is a bit of madness. And there’s conflict between us, between ourselves, figuring out our past. And all of that is just approached in a magnificent way and I can’t wait for it.”
