John Cena discussed his reaction to the first pages of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad script and what ultimately drew him to the DC film.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will assemble a team consisting of returning favorites and DC Extended Universe newcomers that include John Cena as an undisclosed character. Of course, details on James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad are being carefully guarded, but John Cena did offer fans a hint at what to expect from the beginning of the highly-anticipated DC film during an interview with Collider.
While John Cena did not reveal specifics, the wrestler-turned-actor did note that the beginning of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad feels like its own movie. Furthermore, John Cena credited James Gunn for his commitment to narrative and creating compelling characters:
“I was blown away. The first 10 pages [are] like a movie in itself. It’s really, really special. That’s because the guy steering the ship [Gunn] is committed to narrative and committed to creating characters that we connect with and sending them on an awesome journey. I mean what he did with [Guardians of the Galaxy] is really special.”
As John Cena explained, he was also impressed by James Gunn’s commitment when he walked into the filmmaker’s office during their first meeting and saw the storyboards for The Suicide Squad on the wall. However, John Cena added that James Gunn impressed him most with his passion and dedication to The Suicide Squad:
“You want go to work with people who jump out of bed every day and want to go to work. [James Gunn] is the epitome of that. He cares so much about what he’s doing and I think especially when he’s put in a position to write, develop, and do this by his rules essentially. He chose the franchise. He kind of dictated his terms and now he’s really betting on himself and I hope everybody enjoys seeing it as much as we’re enjoying making it, because it’s awesome.”
