John Wick: Chapter 4 made a killing at the box office over its opening weekend, raking in an impressive $73.5 million in the United States alone. The Keanu Reeves movie earned an additional $64 million internationally, leading in each of the 71 markets where it premiered for a combined global gross of $137.5 million.
In second place at the box office was Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which earned $9.7 million in its second weekend of release. The superhero sequel, starring Zachary Levi as the titular hero, saw a 69% drop in ticket sales from its opening weekend, a significant decline that may be attributed to the popularity of John Wick: Chapter 4. Despite the dip in earnings, Fury of he Gods has still grossed $102.4 million worldwide.
Horror fans continued to turn out for Scream VI, which landed in third place with $8.4 million during its third weekend in theaters. Creed III and 65 both remained in the top five at the box office, with the former earning $8.36 million and the latter making $3.4 million.
John Wick is a highly-successful action franchise that has captured the attention and admiration of audiences worldwide. The movies revolve around the character of John Wick, a retired hitman who is forced to return to his old life when he is targeted by a group of ruthless assassins. They are known for their intense action sequences, stunning cinematography and a powerful performance from Keanu Reeves.
Chapter 4 is the first film in the Lionsgate franchise not to be penned by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, with Shay Hatten and Michael Finch taking over writing duties for the project. Production on the film began back in June 2021, with principal photography wrapping in October of that year. Filming took place in Europe, Japan and New York.
The future of the John Wick franchise
Keanu Reeves and other John Wick cast members recently joined the cast of the spin-off movie Ballerina. The project is being directed by Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard helmer Len Wiseman, with Ana de Armas playing its lead character.
Keanu Reeves and Ian McShane lead the Chapter 4 cast, which also includes Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Lance Reddick, Clancy Brown, Marko Zaror, Scott Adkins, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson and Rina Sawayama.
In addition to Ballerina, Lionsgate is also working on The Continental, a spin-off series that explores the origins of Ian McShane’s Winston Scott. Colin Woodell is playing Winston, with a supporting cast that includes Ayomide Adegun, Peter Greene, Mel Gibson, Ben Robson, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Jessica Allain, Mishel Prada and Nhung Kate. The series is set to premiere on Peacock in 2023.
