According to a report by Forbes, Warner Bros. is no longer developing both The Joker & Harley Quinn film and a standalone project centered on Jared Leto’s version of Batman’s arch-nemesis.
Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn were introduced to the DC Extended Universe in 2016’s Suicide Squad and while the film was met with tepid reactions, the financial success of the supervillain team-up movie reportedly prompted Warner Bros. to begin developing solo films featuring the two aforementioned antagonists. However, with the studio altering their plans following the disappointing box office numbers for Justice League and the record-breaking gross for Aquaman, the Joker and Harley Quinn project, as well as a solo film featuring Jared Leto’s Clown Prince of Crime, have reportedly been dropped:
“The Mad Love-type Joker and Harley Quinn film has also fallen by the wayside, as has the solo Joker project for Jared Leto’s version of the character from Suicide Squad.”
Nevertheless, Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey.
Full details on the Birds of Prey plot are currently unknown, though the film is said to center on Huntress, Black Canary, and Harley Quinn joining forces to protect Cassandra Cain when she comes into the possession of a diamond belonging to a criminal kingpin known as Black Mask.
Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan, McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Ali Wong, Robert Catrini, and Michael Masini have also been cast in undisclosed roles.
Birds of Prey will be released in theaters on February 7, 2020.
