First ‘Joker And Harley Quinn’ Movie Details Revealed

Joker Harley Quinn

Last year, it was announced that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love) were tapped to develop a DC Extended Universe spin-off for the Joker and Harley Quinn. The film was described to be more of a dark romantic comedy featuring the two iconic characters at the center.

Warner Bros. and DC Films often announce numerous different projects that are in development that often times are put on hold or never even see the light of day. However, some may be surprised to hear that Ficarra and Requa already have a script for this potential spin-off.

In a recent interview, the writing duo reveal the status of their script for this movie centered on one of the most iconic couples in DC Comics:

Ficarra: It is great. The whole thing starts with Harley kidnapping Dr Phil. Played by Dr Phil hopefully. Because her and the Joker are having problems with their relationship. We had so much fun, I don’t know if we have had more fun writing a script in our career. It was sort of like, we wrote ‘Bad Santa’ a couple of years ago, and it was that sensibility mixed with our ‘This Is Us’ sensibility. We kind of meshed them together. We were doing a relationship movie but with the sensibility of a ‘Bad Santa,’ f***ed up, mentally deranged people. It was a lot of fun.

However, this Joker and Harley Quinn spin-off isn’t guaranteed an official greenlight from Warner Bros. and DC Films. The writing duo remain reveal as to whether or not they think their film will ever come into fruition:

Requa: I don’t know where it is on the queue of DC movies

Ficarra: We handed the script in and everybody loved it. But I don’t know when they are going to do it.

Jared Leto and Margot Robbie debuted as the DCEU’s Joker and Harley Quinn in the 2016 film Suicide Squad. Since that film was released, critics and audiences were heavily mixed on Leto’s portrayal of the Clown Prince of Gotham while there was near-unanimous praise for Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn, with many singling her out as the highlight of the film.

Even if this Joker and Harley Quinn spin-off film never comes into fruition, the two are expected to return for the upcoming Suicide Squad 2, which currently has The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor attached to direct from a script written by him and Todd Stashwick.

Also, for fans of both Joker and Harley Quinn, two upcoming projects are on the way for them both. Todd Phillips is currently directing a standalone Joker film with Academy Award-nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the role. The film will be separate from the continuity of the DCEU. Also, Harley Quinn is set to appear in the upcoming Birds of Prey, which will be directed by Cathy Yan.
