Joker star Joaquin Phoenix is asking Governor Andrew Cuomo to release New York prisoners amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The coronavirus pandemic has prompted governments across the world to urge people to practice social distancing and shut down businesses, all in hopes of slowing the spread of the virus and preventing hospitals from exceeding their capacity. However, many are concerned that such measures are impossible to follow in prisons and have been calling for the release of the incarcerated to prevent an outbreak among them and workers at these facilities.
Now, Joker star Joaquin Phoenix is calling on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to release prisoners in the state. In a message delivered by the Release Aging People in Prison Campaign, the Joker star outlined why it would be difficult for the incarcerated and prison workers to properly follow the practices required to lower the risk of being exposed to the coronavirus:
“The spread of coronavirus in prisons threatens the health and safety of all of us. When you’re incarcerated, theres’s no such thing as social distancing and ensuring good hygiene in not an option. Leaders must do everything possible to prevent incarcerated people and those who work in prisons from becoming ill and spreading the virus. I’m calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo to take action in New York by granting clemency to New Yorkers in prison. The lives of so many people depend on his actions. No one deserbes to die in prioson from COVID-19.
TMZ reports that Melissa DeRosa, the Secretary to the Governor, has informed the outlet that a process has begun to release prisoners “with 90 days or less remaining on their sentence who are 55 years of age or older, and whose underlying crime was not a violent felony or a sex offense.”
Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:
Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker is now available on Digital HD, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD.
