‘Joker’ Fan-Art Imagines Joaquin Phoenix As The Man Who Laughs

Joker Joaquin Phoenix

While only 30 seconds long, the test footage that Warner Bros. released yesterday in regards to the Todd Phillips Joker film already has many buzzing and speculating even further about how Joaquin Phoenix will portray the Clown Prince of Crime. Consider, the bulk of the footage is the camera slowly closing in on Joaquin Phoenix, his lips eventually curling to form a smile, and very quick flashes of a clown’s face over Phoenix’s. And while the look at the end of that test footage definitely won’t be how Phoenix actually looks as the Batman villain, that doesn’t stop artists and creators out there from testing their work.

Within DC Comics lore, there are a lot of interesting Batman related comic covers in relation to the Clown Prince of Crime, such as The Killing Joke, Brian Azzarello’s Joker, or Ed Brubaker and Doug Mahnke’s The Man Who Laughs. And while the cover to The Man Who Laughs isn’t comprised of various images of the Joker, one Reddit user took the still frames of the clown face over Phoenix’s from the Joker test footage to create a photo collage, titling it The Man Who Laughed. Here, have a look:

In addition to the test footage likely not being representative of how Joaquin Phoenix will look, we probably won’t get an official, if any, look at how Phoenix will appear as the Joker on-film until…well, your guess is as good as mine. But what do you think of this creation here? Would you want to see some comic cover inspirations with the marketing for the film? Let us know in the comments below.

Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker will be released on October 4, 2019. The cast currently includes Joaquin Phoenix, Marc Maron, Glenn Fleshler, Shea Whigham, Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Josh Pais, and Brett Cullen.
