Joker actor Marc Maron criticizes his director Todd Phillips’ comments on no longer doing comedy movies due to “woke culture”.

Last week, Todd Phillips, who’s famous for his work as a director behind comedies such as The Hangover trilogy, Old School and Due Date revealed that he left comedy behind to pursue films like Joker, citing the backlash he would potentially receive within today’s “woke culture.” Todd Phillips’ comments drew criticism from some peers in the entertainment industry and now one of the film’s cast members Marc Maron is the latest to share his two cents on the matter.

On a recent episode of his WTF Podcast, Marc Maron responded to his Joker director’s comments regarding modern comedy:

“There’s plenty of people being funny right now. Not only being funny but being really f*****g  funny. There are still lines to be rode. If you like to ride a line, you can still ride a line. If you want to take chances, you can still take chances. Really, the only thing that’s off the table, culturally, at this juncture –and not even entirely– is shamelessly punching down for the sheer joy of hurting people. For the sheer excitement and laughter that some people get from causing people pain, from making people uncomfortable, from making people feel excluded. Y’know, that excitement.”

Marc Maron continued his criticism of Todd Phillips’ comments, citing that there’s a fine line between proper comedy and being insensitive:

“As I’ve said before, it’s no excuse. If you’re too intimidated to try to do comedy that is deep or provocative, or even a little controversial, without hurting people, then you’re not good at what you do. Or maybe you’re just insensitive.”

What do you make of Marc Maron’s response to Todd Phillips’ “woke culture” comments? Do you agree with his sentiments on the state of modern comedy? Here is the synopsis for the film:

Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker is in theaters now.
