New ‘Joker’ Set Photos Reveal Joaquin Phoenix Filming Cemetery Scene

New set photos from the upcoming Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix reveal the next Clown Prince of Crime shooting a cemetery scene for the DC standalone film.

Production on the project is currently underway with Todd Phillips (The Hangover) at the helm. Phillips is directing the film from a script co-written by Scott Silver (8 Mile) and himself. He’s also producing the film alongside The Wolf of Wall Street producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff with Richard Baratta serving as executive producer.

The latest set photos reveal Phoenix braving the cold as Arthur Fleck on location at a cemetery in New York City. You can check out the photos below!

Official plot details are still under wraps but the Joker origin film is to be a gritty and grounded crime film set in 1980s Gotham City, separate from DC’s current shared cinematic universe in an effort to create new and unique storylines as the studio expands DC canon.

The story is rumored to feature the Clown Prince of Crime as a failed 1980s comedian who becomes The Joker after bombing with audiences, a deliberate nod to Martin Scorsese’s 1982 film The King of Comedy about a delusional comedian. The studio has officially described the film as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.”

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019. But before that Warner Bros. currently has Aquaman set to hit theaters December 21, 2018, followed by Shazam! on April 5, 2019, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020.

Joker is one of the many projects in the works at Warner Bros. and DC Films, including The Batman, The Flash standalone film, Green Lantern Corps, Black Adam, Supergirl, New Gods, Nightwing, a Deathstroke film, Justice League Dark, and Birds of Prey.
