Director Todd Phillips has taken to Instagram to thank fans for getting Joker to $1 billion with a brand new advertisement.

Just recently, Joker hit a billion dollars at the global box office, an impressive feat considering that the film is R-rated and isn’t intended to spawn any sequels or spin-offs. This is certainly an unprecedented move for a film that was doused in controversy even before it began rolling, but somehow Todd Phillips’ vision was able to take the world by storm, both commercially and critically.

With Joker being the first R-rated picture to hit a billion dollars, director Todd Phillips released a brand new video promoting the film on Instagram that is filled with Twitter reactions from fans. It’s the fans who brought Joker to such a prominent stage in our pop culture, and it’s a sweet and fitting tribute by Todd Phillips to showcase their sentiments. Hitting a billion dollars is a milestone for any film, but it certainly feels special for Joker, which had a budget of less than $70 million. Joker is also Todd Phillips’ highest-grossing film, a spot that was originally held by 2011’s The Hangover Part II. Joker shows no signs of stopping any time soon and will more than certainly dominate awards season, which is rapidly moving closer as we enter the end of the year.

Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fracturedsociety. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
