One of the most anticipated elements of the upcoming DCEU film Suicide Squad is the newest onscreen interpretation of the Joker, now portrayed by Jared Leto. Following the footsteps of Heath Ledger is no easy task, but a brilliant actor like Leto promises something incredible. And under the direction of David Ayer, I think it is safe to say we are in great hands.
But one of the aspects of the Joker that have left fans questioning is all the tattoos he has, whether it is the “Damaged” inked on his forehead, the many “Hahaha’s” around his chest and so forth, this crazy, psychotic look on Batman’s most iconic villain grabs one’s attention in an instant. In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, Ayer talked about the Joker’s tattoos and teeth.
The tattoos tell a very specific story. And eventually people will decipher them and understand what’s going on, but obviously they’re contentious, any time you do something new it’s contentious. There’s very specific stories and easter eggs in those tattoos. And even his teeth, there’s an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It’s putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world.
It makes sense that there are easter eggs aplenty for fans to decipher through in every image they can find of Leto’s Joker. Also, Ayer’s take on this iteration being of a “working class” type that could live in our world is an interesting perspective to take. Although the anarchistic nature of Ledger’s joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight seemed realistic, with all the new fantastical elements of this DC Extended Universe factored in, I am intrigued to see if there is a beautiful marriage between both aspects, creating an even crazier Joker.
Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5.
