Jon Bernthal commented on the rumors surrounding the possibility of seeing The Punisher continue on new platform like Disney Plus.
Shortly after the second season of The Punisher debuted on Netflix, the streaming service canceled the Jon Bernthal series as it prepared to cease its relationship with Marvel Television. While it appeared as though Jon Bernthal’s time as The Punisher was over for good, Marvel Studios’ plans to produce television projects for Disney Plus offered fans some hope that the series could be revived on the upcoming streaming platform.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jon Bernthal expressed his gratitude for how The Punisher has resonated with the law enforcement community, the military community, and comic book fans. While The Punisher may have concluded with its second season, Jon Bernthal says the character still holds a place in his heart and is “100 percent in my bones”:
“Frank Castle, the place where he’s at and the journey where he’s at, is something that I bought into wholeheartedly. He will always have a place in my heart and I will always be very protective of him and that project.”
With speculation regarding the possibility of seeing The Punisher and other characters from the Netflix return on a different platform still going strong, Jon Bernthal noted that he’s not necessarily holding out hope to see the character continue with him in the role. However, Jon Bernthal added that what’s important to him is that The Punisher is done right for the fans:
“For me, with Frank, it’s really not whether we do it again or not, or whether I play him again or not, it’s about doing it right. I just care so much about getting him right, and that’s kind of where it begins and ends with me. I just give want to give the folks whom he means so much to the Frank Castle that they deserve. That’s sort of where I’m at with it. I love Frank. I always have, I always will.”
