Joss Whedon Open To Return To Marvel Studios If He Could Helm A Female-Driven ‘Avengers Franchise’ Film

Whedon Female Marvel FilmWhile he has decided to step away for the time being, it sounds like director Joss Whedon isn’t completely ruling out working with Marvel Studios again in the future. But after an experience on Avengers: Age Of Ultron that seemed to break the director a bit, I wouldn’t expect to hear anything about him potentially tackling any of their future event films. While speaking with The Wrap, Whedon commented on if he would be interested in working with the studio again and in particular perhaps helming a female-driven ‘Avengers franchise’ film for the studio.

Yeah, of course. Although I tend more towards the Jessica Jones-ey kind of stories than the delightful Supergirl stories that my daughter wants.

While he won’t be working on their upcoming Captain Marvel solo film, Whedon is very excited about seeing a female character finally getting the spotlight on the big screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director briefly commented on that one and gave full credit to Kevin Feige for getting that film going.

Kevin Feige fought a mighty fight to get her on the schedule. So it’s a start. You could say that should be a middle, but it’s a start.

Now, while some might assume that was a shot at Marvel Studios lack of female driven franchise currently, the start he was referring to was directed at Hollywood as a whole. Are there any female characters over at Marvel Studios that you’d like to see Whedon take a crack at? Or maybe a few you’d like to see join forces seeing as Marvel Studios seems to be keen on team-up films as of recent? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below.

I write stuff. Sometimes.

  • Maximillian Pegasus

Joss Whedon to direct Shazam or Green Lantern.

  • Carl

    He’d be great for a She-Hulk movie.

  • Chris W

I want Whedon to be given F4.

  • Steve Steve

Glad to hear a shout-out to Feige. It demonstrates Whedon’s enduring respect for the man. A Whedon-made solo, female character film would be amazing. Who even cares which character?! HAHA!

I want Whedon to stay away. We don’t need Avengers 5: The Quippening.

I know it’s a relatively new series, but A-Force looks pretty good. just need to introduce a few characters soon.

I’d love to see him step down to the Netflix level to do She-Hulk and then bring her and the rest of the Defenders up to the movie stage. With a world full of super characters and movies featuring multiple big characters, I think they need to figure out more crossover between TV and movies with their main characters. TV shows give greater capacity for character development, while movies are more suitable for telling the huge stories. The two working in harmony with each other would create a cinematic world every bit as fleshed out and immersive as the comics.
