Joss Whedon claimed that Ray Fisher’s Cyborg role was cut down in Justice League for “logical” reasons and bad acting.
Ray Fisher, who plays Victor Stone AKA Cyborg in the DC Extended Universe has been public with his experiences working on the reshoots of Justice League. After Zack Snyder departed the director’s chair months before the film was set to hit theaters, Joss Whedon stepped in to take over for reshoots and post-production. Ray Fisher alleged that Joss Whedon exhibited behavior that was “gross, abusive, unprofessional and completely unacceptable.”
In the 2017 theatrical cut of Justice League, Ray Fisher’s Cyborg’s role was cut down from its original significance as seen in the eventual 2021 Director’s Cut from Zack Snyder. The downgraded role he received in Joss Whedon’s version was subject too much scrutiny from fans that wanted to see Cyborg portrayed with true… well, justice.
In a recent interview with NY Magazine (courtesy of Jumbled Beats on Twitter), Joss Whedon responded to Ray Fisher’s allegations. According to the interview, the role of Cyborg was cut down in the 2017 version of Justice League because he felt that the story “logically made no sense,” and thought Ray Fisher’s performance wasn’t good.
While the Joss Whedon cut was criticized for cutting down Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, the Zack Snyder Cut was praised for restoring the original vision for Victor Stone. Among the numerous elements of the film that received praise from critics and audiences alike, the performance of Ray Fisher’s Cyborg was often viewed as the heart of the film.
Here is the synopsis for Zack Snyder’s Justice League:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
