‘Justice League,’ ‘Aquaman’ Coming To VR Thanks To New Deal

The hype for the DCEU has reached fever-pitch proportions with the release of the Justice League trailer and a few looks at Aquaman. Adding on to the hype, especially for VR fans, Imax and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have signed a three VR-title agreement. Including Justice League, Aquaman, and a third unknown title, the deal will bring one new experience a year, with the Justice League one coming in late 2017.

These experiences will begin as exclusive events at Imax location-based VR sites before transitioning to other VR platforms. In fact, Imax has been building up to location-based VR through “pods” installed in movie theaters and other public spaces. Their first test site is the VR Experience Centre in Los Angeles and five more locations are set to open during the coming months. If these pods draw in crowds, Imax hopes to roll out the concept globally to select multiplexes and commercial locations such as shopping centers and tourist destinations.

Imax CEO Richard L. Gelfond had this to say about the deal: “A key component of our vision for VR is to help usher in the first wave of high-end blockbuster-based content. Justice League and Aquaman feature some of the most beloved characters on the planet, providing iconic properties to launch this effort.”

It certainly makes sense that Imax would reach out to Warner Bros. to secure access to the DCEU and reap the rewards of its immense popularity. Of course, Warner Bros. also sees a benefit to this deal too.

“We believe that capitalizing on Justice League and Aquaman characters from our well-known DC properties will broaden the appeal of this fast-growing technology,” said Ron Sanders, president of Warner Bros. Worldwide Home Entertainment Distribution.

So VR fans, what do you think about seeing your favorite DC characters in all-new VR experiences?

Justice League hit theaters November 17, 2017 while Aquaman is currently slated to arrive December 21, 2018.
