One of the most divisive elements of Justice League is the erasure of Henry Cavill’s mustache during all his scenes as Superman. And it turns out that Cavill, who famously could not shave his mustache due to commitments filming the latest Mission: Impossible installment, almost got away with not having to have one at all.
Warner Bros. had reached out to Paramount in order to find out if there was a way that Cavill, who’s Superman reshoots overlapped with the production of Mission: Impossible 6, could shave his mustache that was necessary for the role. After Paramount shot down that suggestion, however, a VFX artist who worked on Justice League has the next intriguing part of the story.
Over on Reddit, the VFX artist discussed Warner Bros. counteroffer: Let Cavill shave and in return they would create a CGI mustache for the Mission: Impossible film, rather than going through the far more complex (and uncanny valley-esque) method of digitally removing the mustache.
“A mix – to some people it’s a cool little project to get stuck in to and another problem to solve, which is what a lot of VFX is about. Challenging. To me, as a fan, I was annoyed haha Paramount should’ve shaved him and stuck a fake one on for MI6. Ridiculously petty of them. We did tests on already shot footage of Superman to add a beard as well to show the MI6 team at Paramount it was loads easier, and Warner Bros offered to pay for all the beard adding shots in MI6. They said no.”
So while Paramount said no to Warner Bros. offer, you can’t blame them for trying. It would have been far less complex to add a false mustache rather than remove one, and they had shot the test footage to prove it.
We will have to wait and see just how important this expensive mustache is when Mission: Impossible 6 is released next year.
Here is the synopsis for Justice League:
“Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.”
Directed by Zack Snyder, the film stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J.K. Simmons, Ciaran Hinds, Amber Heard, Joe Morton and Billy Crudup.
