Karen Fukuhara, a relative newcomer who will soon play Katana in Warner Bros. and DC’s Suicide Squad, was interviewed about the film earlier this month prior to Warner Bros’ The Big Picture presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
Fukuhara opened up about where Katana’s loyalties lie in the film.
“She’s very loyal to Amanda Waller and Rick Flag. She works under them and keeps a rowdy bunch in line. She’s a protector and a fierce warrior.”
Of course Fukuhara was asked about the Soultaker, Katana’s sword of choice that captures the souls of its victims and grants her the ability to communicate with that soul, including that of her deceased husband.
She has her husband’s soul in her sword and I got to talk to Maseo throughout the film and yes, of course that’s the in the film, but you’ll have to wait and see how much of the plays into the movie.
Fukuhara then went into detail about learning the stunt choreography necessary to bring Katana to life.
I was really lucky because I blessed with a really great stunt double and stunt coordinator and they taught me all of the choreography during pre-production,” the actress explained. “I was able to do all of my own stunts except for one dive role, but all of my stunts. So, yeah, I got to run on top of a car, I did all of my sword work… It really made a difference when I knew everything from muscle memory and I didn’t have to think about it when the cameras were rolling.”
When asked about her co-star Jared Leto and his rendition of The Joker, Fukuhara only had high praise.
“I’ve seen him on set, I’ve met him, I’ve introduced myself, but everything has been like, ‘Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Hi, pretty,'” Fukuhara says. “I’d be like, ‘Hi, I’m Karen,’ and he’d be like, ‘Haaaa.'”
