While Summit Entertainment has yet to officially greenlight a John Wick: Chapter 3, Chapter 2‘s unexpected overperformance more or less guarantees that a third movie will be made. And it’s a good thing, too, because the ending leaves the movie wide open to a sequel – as star Keanu Reeves is quick to point out in an interview.
Spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 2 ahead, obviously. This is your only warning if you have yet to see it and don’t want the ending revealed to you.
The sequel ends with John Wick assassinating crime lord Santino D’Antonio on Continental grounds. While D’Antonio had it coming, the act itself broke Continental’s rules, and as such led to Wick’s expulsion from the order of assassins. Given that Wick had a $14 million bounty on his head that was completely international, this means that he has no sanctuary as hundreds of assassins will soon be on his trail.
Keanu Reeves was ecstatic about the opportunity that this story development presented. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Reeves claimed that having Wick go rogue fits with the evolution of his character, and that it will allow the plot to go in a completely different direction from this point on:
“We wanted to come to a place that John literally had to fight for his life, and that he’s starting to become a little anti-establishment. And that’s really where the character starts to develop. It’s like the rules and world that he lived by, aren’t starting to work for him, and they’re not working! There are people who are out to get him because of [his] transgressions. And we liked that idea because we like John – when I say ‘we’ I mean the producers, the writer, the director — we like to see him suffer! We wanted to put him in another vulnerable… ‘How’s he going to get out?! How’s he going to survive?! What’s it mean?! What’s he going to do?!’ I don’t know! We have some ideas. Maybe he needs to go to Jerusalem! Or he’s in the middle of the desert. Or whatever!”
So while it doesn’t sound like there’s a clear plan for the sequel’s story beyond this initial premise, it sounds as though the cast and crew are totally on board to do another one. Hopefully, we’ll get confirmation that the third movie will enter development soon.
