John Wick: Chapter 2 is set to hit theaters this Friday. The neo-noir action thriller is a return to form for action films in a market dominated by superheroes. In the first film, we were introduced to the shadowy underground world of assassins in New York City but it certainly hinted at a much larger world left unexplored. Many fans have expressed an interest in seeing a spinoff based on the assassin hotel, The Continental. While there aren’t any current plans to develop a spinoff yet, the film’s star Keanu Reeves is looking ahead to a possible third chapter in the franchise. Reeves told Entertainment Weekly that if his second outing as the feared assassin is received well by audiences, he thinks we will see him back for John Wick: Chapter 3:
“I love the character and the world. Whether or not I get the chance to do another chapter is really up to the audience. If they enjoy what we did — and hopefully they do, fingers-crossed, I really dig it — but if they do enjoy it, then I’ll have the chance to continue the story of the character and the world.”
Reeves also revealed an interesting fact about the upcoming sequel. It seems John didn’t have any downtime in between his vengeful rampage in the first film and his call to action in the follow-up, as John Wick: Chapter 2 takes place just days after the first film:
“When we last left John Wick he was going off into the sunset — the moonset — with him and his dog. John Wick 2 takes place maybe five days after that. Big picture, the story is about someone from John’s past calling in what we call a marker. And basically, if John doesn’t do [what the holder of the marker wants], he dies. If he kills the person who holds his marker, I die because of the rules of the Continental. John is on a mission to reclaim his life again. To me, it’s about John Wick fighting for John.”
When we pick up with Wick in the sequel, a bounty is placed on his head after he refuses to help a former associate — who he has sworn a blood oath to — plot to overtake an international assassins guild, putting John in the crosshairs himself.
The film also stars Common, Ruby Rose, Bridget Moynahan, John Leguizamo, Lance Reddick, and Ian Mcshane, and Lawrence Fishburne. Here’s the official synopsis:
Keanu Reeves returns in the sequel to the 2014 hit as legendary hitman John Wick who is forced to back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild.
