With the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi only a couple of months away, we have got a small glimpse at one of the film’s new additions to that galaxy far, far away. While plot details are still very much under wraps, actress Kelly Marie Tran has talked a little about her character, a Resistance Mechanic called Rose. Teasing what we can expect to see from Rose in The Last Jedi, Tran told Entertainment Weekly:

“Rose is smart and she’s confident and she’s loyal. She’s going to be such a cool character because she’s someone who isn’t a model. She’s not a superhero. She’s just kind of an everyday person, and that’s something special about her. She’s someone who is able to face her fears in the face of adversity even though she kind of is a background player in the Resistance.”

Tran also admitted to not being a Star Wars fan before getting involved with the franchise, something she says helped her engage with her role:

“It was good because I was able to kind of look at this character objectively and not think about what it should be or what Star Warswas like, but obviously when you get something like this you want to research everything and watch every single movie and you just can’t help but respect how amazing it is.”

While auditioning for the part, Tran was still working in an office, which was where she was when she got the call telling her she had been cast:

“I found out. I couldn’t tell anyone, so I just went right back to my job and finished out the work day. I was dying inside. I was numb; I was answering emails like what’s happening?!!”

Tran also talked a bit about preparing for the fame that comes with the role, revealing she had been given advice on what to expect from fellow Star Wars actors John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, who both joined the franchise two years ago in The Force Awakens:

“John [Boyega] and Daisy [Ridley] have told me a little bit about what it was like for them. I think it’s different for everyone. And I don’t know if I’ll be ready until it happens. It’s one of those things that you can anticipate, you can think about, but you kind of just have to take it as it comes. But I have a great family and great friends, and I think that they’ll keep me grounded.”

As for Rose’s future in the Star Wars universe? Even Tran doesn’t know yet! When asked if she would be returning for Episode IX, she responded:

“Let me know if you hear anything!”

Fans can see Tran’s Rose joining Daisy Ridley’s Rey, John Boyega’s Finn and the rest of the Resistance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi this December.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran.
