Kelly McGillis has revealed she was not invited back to appear opposite Tom Cruise in Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick.

Top Gun featured actress Kelly McGillis in the role of  Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, an astrophysicist and civilian Top Gun instructor who was also the love interest to Tom Cruise’s Pete Mitchell. While some hoped to see her reprise her role in Top Gun: Maverick, Kelly McGillis told Entertainment Tonight that she was not invited back for the Tom Cruise sequel.

When asked if anyone reached out to hear about returning for Top Gun: Maverick, Kelly McGillis stated she had no been asked back and pointed to her age and weight as a likely reason for her exclusion from the sequel:

“Oh my god, no. They did not and nor do I think they would ever. I mean, I’m old and I’m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about. I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age, as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff.”
