In the Avengers: Infinity War featurette available on both the digital release and Blu-ray for Doctor Strange, President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige emphasized the importance of having both the writers and directors of Captain America: Winter Solider and Captain America: Civil War in place as they head into what will no doubt be Marvel’s biggest feature yet:

“There’s a simplicity of story that we’re leaning into. Our writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who have done incredible work for us in the past. Joe and Anthony Russo, who are taking everything they learned from Winter Soldier and everything they learned from Civil War, this is the team equipped to handle this many characters, and still making it feel like what it is: a great, three-act piece of storytelling.”

Over the last few years, the Russo Brothers have solidified themselves as the best directors currently working within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As we have seen, they’ve done an incredible job balancing out their characters. Never did Captain America: Civil War ever feel overloaded or uneven as it told a story that included over 15 characters. The motivations were clear and the characters were provided the right amount of screen time to support their sides of the argument.

Having a creative team that can strike that perfect balance is even more crucial going into Avengers: Infinity War. The film itself will be the culmination of the cinematic universe Marvel has established over the last 9 years as it will feature even more characters than Civil War did come together to take on Thanos, who was first teased back in 2012 in The Avengers.

Kevin Feige also assured fans that no matter how many characters, no matter how large the spectacle, the film will remain grounded as it focuses on a human story:

“It’s a very human story, even with this spectacle, even with all the players involved.”

Avengers: Infinity War is currently filming in Atlanta. The film is slated to hit theaters May 4, 2018.

Doctor Strange is currently available now on Digital HD, and releases on both DVD and Blu-ray February 28, 2017.
