Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recounted the emotional period when his studio and Sony split up over Spider-Man.

The summer of 2019 was a particularly stressful summer for comic-book movie fans. While Avengers: Endgame did come out to glorious fanfare, it also brought with it the farewell of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, two staples in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase three later came to its conclusion with Spider-Man: Far From Home, which ended with Peter Parker’s identity being outed. With the film ending on a cliffhanger, anticipation was through the roof for what was next for Marvel and technically Sony, who co-produced the Spider-Man films in the MCU. However, things took a turn for the worse when it was revealed that Sony wouldn’t be moving forward with Marvel for the foreseeable future.

Things looked bleak for Spider-Man, to say the least. However, Marvel and Sony eventually patched things up, allowing Spider-Man to exist within the MCU. Fans might have thought it was an emotional few months, but Kevin Feige, the architect behind the MCU, also felt the same. The Marvel President shared his thoughts on the temporary break-up in a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes.

“There was a time when it looked like Marvel Studios would not be involved in Spider-Man movies going forward for Sony. It was only a few months, but it was an emotional few months for, I think, all of us on all sides. And a very public few months for whatever reason. I always want to look at the bright side, and the bright side is we got to make two great Spider-Man movies with Amy Pascal and [director] Jon Watts and [Sony Pictures MPG Chairman] Tom Rothman and Tom Holland, and I was very proud of that and very happy with that, and of course, wanted it to continue. I always want to be happy with what we have, instead of upset with what we don’t.”

Things looked all too bleak but Sony and Marvel reached a new deal together which allowed Kevin Feige to produce one more Spider-Man film – No Way Home – and allow the character to appear in one more Marvel film. In return, Disney would have to pony up a quarter of the budget for the next Spider-Man film and only keep 25% of the net gross.

“Luckily, Tom Rothman, and [then-Disney CEO] Bob Iger, and [Disney Studios Chairman] Alan Horn, and [then-Walt Disney Studios President] Alan Bergman, and Tom Holland himself all realized, ‘Wouldn’t it just be more fun if we just kept doing it? Let’s not get business or politics in the way. Because the deal always started with Amy Pascal and I having nothing to do with numbers, or contracts, or politics. It had to do with story, and a love of Spider-Man and Peter Parker and the Marvel universe.”

Tom Holland was last seen in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Here is the synopsis:

“Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks is quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks. Spider-Man and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) join forces to fight the havoc unleashed across the continent but all is not as it seems.”
