This past weekend finally saw the release of Marvel’s Doctor Strange. In addition to marking the characters debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe the film also introduced new elements into the MCU, including the concept of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Speaking to Slashfilm, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed what role Doctor Strange will play in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and how the concept of alternate dimensions will be explored in the next Avengers film.

Doctor Strange introduces the Time Stone, one of the six infinity Stones being sought by Thanos, to the MCU. Similar to how the Mind Stone gave life to The Vision and has literally become a part of the character, the Time Stone becomes a key source of Doctor Strange’s power and is instrumental in the defeat of a powerful threat. Kevin Fiege discussed the decision to make the Infinity Stones more personal to our heroes.

“I think that’s there are a couple of reasons for that. One is as you’re introducing the fourth and fifth versions of these MacGuffins that we’ve been playing with for a long time, you wanna do something different with them and not just have them be an object passed around. So the notion that something is inherent in the literal body of one of your lead heroes is interesting. And the idea that the Eye of Agamotto’s a great MacGuffin over the, great relic over the course of Doctor Strange comics anyway. That was a; that seemed like a fun potential to say you know why it can do a lot of those things? Because it’s this other thing. As we then get into future movies, it also becomes, you know, certainly ripe with potential for conflict and drama that it’s not something buried in a cave it’s something he has to go get, but rather something in a beloved hero’s head.”

Fans of the comics know that if/when Thanos gets his hands on all six Infinity Stones and uses the Infinity Gauntlet to harness their powers, he will have the ability to manipulate time and reality. Kevin Feige discussed how the introduction of alternate dimensions and time manipulation in Doctor Strange sets up the new threat that Thanos will pose in Avengers: Infinity War.

“Yeah, I mean, I think it, it clearly it is setting up certain things. In the immediate future being the movies, we’ve announced… I think those with knowledge of the comics may expect things that will not be happening in the movies. Those who don’t know what has happened in the comics will be shocked at what we do anyway. But yeah, one, I mean, the once that Gauntlet is on as the poster of Doctor Strange says the impossibilities are endless. How do you fight that? How do you, how can you defeat that? So we play into all of that. We play into all that stuff. I don’t know that we’ll get into Earth 1 thru 616. In any one moment anytime soon.”

It appears The Sorcerer Supreme arrived in the Marvel Cinematic Universe just in time, as the prospect of Thanos wielding the power to threaten time and reality will pose a threat The Avengers have never faced before, one that will require Doctor Strange’s unique expertise.

Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 4, 2018. The untitled follow-up is scheduled to be released on May 3, 2019.
