Kevin Feige Was Responsible For Wolverine’s Hair In First ‘X-Men’

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recalls working as a producer on the very first 'X-Men,' where he made Jackman's iconic Wolverine haircut possible.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recalls his early days working for 20th Century Fox long before there ever was a Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of his fondest memories includes working as a producer on Bryan Singer’s original X-Men film and as it turns out, Feige had a little something to do with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine haircut.

In an interview with Vanity FairFeige reveals that the stylist was initially hesitant to style Jackman’s hair in the same way that Wolverine has traditionally been drawn in the comics.

“[The stylist] eventually went ‘Fine!’ and did a ridiculous version. If you go back and look at it he’s got big-ass hair in that first movie. But that’s Wolverine!”

Although none of the X-Men donned their signature yellow spandex in that first X-Men, Wolverine’s hair in that film was an important visual callback to the source material. As the years have gone by and comic book movies have evolved drastically, filmmakers have become more and more willing to pull directly from comic book artwork to deliver more faithful adaptations of these characters for the fans.

Costume and character designs are always tweaked when making the jump from page to screen, but Kevin Feige is a firm believer in trying to make that transition as seamless as possible:

“I never liked the idea that people weren’t attempting things because of the potential for them to look silly. Anything in a comic book has the potential to look silly. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to make it look cool…The answers are always in the books.”

Now as the head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige has more say than ever before as he looks ahead to the tenth anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the release of three films in 2018: Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp and of course, Avengers: Infinity War.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Benicio Del Toro, Danai Gurira and Josh Brolin.

Avengers: Infinity War will be released in theaters on May 4, 2018, with the untitled Avengers 4 set for a May 3, 2019 release. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Kevin Feige, Wolverine and the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
