Kevin Feige Says Not To Expect The X-Men In The MCU For A “Long Time”

X-Men MCU Phase 4

After waiting years for Marvel to get the X-Men film rights back, Kevin Feige says, “It’ll be a while,” before we actually see them join the MCU.

Now that the year-long merger that has brought the previously Fox-owned Marvel characters like the X-Men and Fantastic Four back under control of Marvel Studios, there are a lot of other plans already set in motion that would mean the integration of these characters is going to take longer than some fans hope. In an interview with io9, Kevin Feige spoke of the X-Men characters and the MCU post-Avengers: Endgame:

“It’s all just beginning and the five-year plan that we’ve been working on, we were working on before any of that was set. So really it’s much more, for us, less about specifics of when and where [the X-Men will appear] right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they’re home. That they’re all back. But it will be a very long time.”

While some fans may be disappointed hearing that those plans have been put behind the upcoming projects like Black WidowShang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu and The Eternals, others find comfort in this news. There still two more X-Men films to release under the 2oth Century Fox banner, Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, going into next year. Having some space between the rebooted MCU versions may not be such a bad thing.

Going more in depth about the future plans for the MCU’s 5 year plan and Phase 4, Kevin Feige had this to say,

“The slate that we’re building over the next five years [is] not apples to apples, it is two very distinct things and I hope they’ll feel very distinct. But there is a similar mentality going into it, which is ‘How can we continue to tell stories with some of the characters that audiences already know and love in a unique way, in a different way, in surprising way, of which we have a lot of plans and ideas and work already going into it?’ [Then] ‘How can we introduce new characters that even hardcore fans, comic fans, have barely known or barely heard of.’ That’s really exciting too.”
