Next Monday, Supergirl will be returning to TV to continue the adventures of Season 2. That episode, titled “Supergirl Lives,” was directed by writer/director/DC superfan Kevin Smith. However, it seems that the powers-that-be were enamored enough with his work that Smith has been invited back to direct a second episode this season.
Smith recently told Comicbook.com that he would be back at the helm for the seventeenth episode of the season and would be returning to Vancouver to start work on it as soon as the end of the month.
“Monday, the episode of Supergirl that I directed airs, which is thrilling,” Smith said. “I got to Sundance tomorrow and I’m up there for IMDb all week, come home Tuesday, then a few days after that, I go up to Vancouver again to direct another episode of Supergirl.”
Like most of us, Smith feels the move to The CW has only strengthened the DC TV show and that the production crew has successfully built upon what they began last season. It also sounds like he’s excited to return to the show and have another go at directing the cast and working with that crew.
“I fell in love with everybody up there, so it was easy to say ‘yeah,’” Smith said. “It takes something special to make you put aside your own shit when you’re creative. When you have the ability to make the stories you want to make, it’s fun to watch other people’s stories, it’s just way more fun to make your own. So whenever you put your shit aside, it has to be for something worthwhile. Working on Supergirl is like a month of your life, but I’d give it up in a heartbeat because the last experience I had was so rewarding and I was so happy with what we did. I like all the people up there, and I believe in the show in a big, bad way. It’s incredibly warm. It’s just well-made entertainment, and it’s got something to it. It’s a little nourishing, it’s not just fast food. There’s always some heart to it.”
Given the quality of the two episodes of The Flash Smith has directed thus far, it’s hard not to get excited at the prospect of him coming back for another stint as director on Supergirl. You can check out the episode description for his first Supergirl episode, “Supergirl Lives,” below.
“Supergirl Lives” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (TV-PG, V) (HDTV)
KEVIN SMITH DIRECTS; ROULETTE RETURNS — Kara (Melissa Benoist) is moved by the story of a missing woman named Izzy (guest star Harley Quinn Smith) and decides to investigate despite Snapper Carr’s (guest star Ian Gomez) order to leave it alone. Kara takes Mon-El (Chris Wood) with her to the last place Izzy was seen and the duo find themselves thrust through a portal to another planet, Slaver’s Moon, where the downtrodden are sold as slaves. The leader of the trafficking ring is none other than Roulette (guest star Dichen Lachman). To make matters worse, Slaver’s Moon has a red sun, which means Kara and Mon-El are stripped of their powers and stuck on the planet with no way home. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Alex (Chyler Leigh) blames herself for Kara’s disappearance, fearing she’s become too focused on her new relationship with Maggie (guest star Floriana Lima) and too complacent in watching out for her sister. Kevin Smith directed the episode with story by Andrew Kreisberg and teleplay by Eric Carrasco & Jess Kardos (#209). Original airdate 1/23/2017.”
Supergirl Season 2 returns with new episodes this coming Monday, January 23, at 8/7c on The CW.
