As reviews for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story start pouring out, general consensus is that the film is a hit. However, many fans are eager to hear what filmmaker and fan favorite geek Kevin Smith thinks about the first Star Wars standalone film. While Smith had shared his initial reactions to Rogue One following the films Hollywood premiere, it is only now, with the review embargo now lifted, that the professional fan boy has given his full review on his Fat Man on Batman podcast along with co-host Marc Bernardin.
Smith revealed that the film far surpassed his reserved expectations.
“It was beyond good. It was fantastic. It was amazing, and maybe my bar wasn’t high but it wasn’t in the s****** either. I expected something. I did not expect this movie. They did not prepare us for what this movie is. I wouldn’t say they’re hiding what this movie is, like this movie is fan f******-tastic.”
A common sentiment among those who have seen Rogue One is that the film is at least similar in tone to The Empire Strikes Back, if not equal to the film in terms of quality. Smith concurred with these assessments.
“It’s Empire Strikes Back good. That’s the highest f****** bar. It’s crazy f****** good, and there’s more wars in this Star Wars movie than in any Star Wars movie prior to this, and it really felt like oh s***.”
