Guy Ritchie is directing this new take on the King Arthur myth, which releases on May 12 as the poster also indicates. The movie was originally scheduled for a summer release in 2016, but was delayed twice to its current date of May 12.
A name change was also in store for the film as it was known as Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur before the delays. As indicated by the trailer below, King Arthur was also scheduled for an IMAX release, but this was canceled after the release date shift.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ritchie commented on the reason for the delays:
“The date kept shifting, I think, simply because of competition. We could have wrapped up a year, but since we didn’t have to wrap up a year ago, you keep this visual effects things going on so that you can get the best out of them. But it’s such a crowded market out there, trying to find a weekend that you stand half a chance in is tough… I quite like taking some more time because I can see the trouble people find themselves in by forcing a visual effect, which really does need more time. We’ve had the luxury of sitting back. If we did not have that luxury, your visual effects aren’t going to be there. We’ve had a year, haven’t we? We’ve have a year to improve them, and today is the last visual effects meeting. It’s a year’s extra work.”
The film also stars Jude Law, Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey, Djimon Hounsou, and Eric Bana. The official synopsis of the film is below:
The young Arthur runs the back passages of Londonium with his crew, not knowing his royal lineage until he grabs Excalibur. Instantly confronted by the sword’s influence, Arthur is forced to make up his mind. Joining the rebellion and an enigmatic young woman named Guinevere, he must learn to address her and eventually understand her magic weapon, deal with his demons and unite the people to defeat the dictator Vortigern, the man who murdered his parents and stole his crown to become king.
