Kit Harington has opened about the major character revealed in the Eternals‘ post-credits sequence.

Major spoilers ahead for Eternals.

Chloe Zhao’s Eternals features two lore-heavy post-credits scenes that tease a bevy of new characters. The first scene introduces Harry Styles as Eros, Thanos’ brother, and his squire Pip. The second scene, however, puts the focus on Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman, who is destined to become The Black Knight.

In the film’s final post-credits sequence, Dane Whitman anxiously opens up a case that houses a sword with his family’s crest on it. As he opens it, an eerie sound emanates from it. Whitman then translates the words inscribed inside the sword’s case, “Death is my reward.” A tar-like substance that looks awfully a lot like symbiote begins to move across the blade as Whitman goes to touch the family heirloom, saying “I’m sorry, I have to try.” An off-screen voice then says “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”

Director Chloe Zhao revealed that the chilling off-screen voice was none other than Mahershala Ali’s Blade, who is due to get his own solo film. It turns out that Kit Harington was completely unaware at the time that his post-credits scene would serve as a backdoor introduction of sorts to Blade. Harington revealed to Fandom that he only learned of Blade’s presence via a text from Zhao a few weeks before the film’s premiere.

“It’s really cool. [Chloé] texted me about that a couple of weeks ago and it sort of blew my mind. I didn’t know that that would be the case, so it’s pretty exciting for me.”

It’s unclear just how Blade and Dane Whitman, who goes on to become The Black Knight will function as a duo, and if the latter will appear in Mahershala Ali’s solo film. Harington then discussed how the possibilities are endless and how he’s excited to see what happens with his character.

“I came into this knowing that there would be, hopefully, some cool possibilities for the future and also looking at the character and responding to the character as I saw it on every level, in every platform. So yeah, this is a great intro into the Marvel world and I’m just very happy that this movie is the one that I got to do it in.”

Here is the synopsis for Chloe Zhao’s Eternals:

“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”

Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
