Superman: Red Son is one of the most unique comics ever put out by DC and an idea for a live-action remake appears to have been thrown around at Warner Bros. Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts recently said he pitched the idea for a live-action Red Son film to the studio but they declined his proposal.
Some rumors surfaced that the studio was asking directors to helm the bold project and Roberts was one of them. Roberts went to Twitter to clarify his end of the story.
Some of the stories out there make it seem like I was one of many pitching a take on something they want to make. That’s not true.

Author of the comic Mark Millar also chimed in with some tweets of his own saying he heard the studio was pitching the idea to other directors.
This thread is giving me tangential pangs of what-could-have-been for the version of Red Son I pitched that will sadly never get made. Oy.

Wait, really? Because I pitched it to them months ago and was told no. It’s the most punk rock thing the DCEU could do in my mind.

Vogt-Roberts also tweeted how a film like Red Son is necessary for the comic book genre to grow and evolve. He stated that story like Red Son can co-exist with the main DCEU timeline. He even said Batman and Superman could be portrayed by different actors from Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.
I think it’s necessary for the comic book movie as a whole to take a step beyond the shared universe by introducing one-off movies.

Closest thing yeah. But they were able to do it as it marked the end of Jackman’s run. I think a “main timeline” can exist with alt-stories.

I think we can sustain a “main shared universe” AND offshoots with alternate takes on characters & different actors existing simultaneously.

Re: Red Son story. I have no idea if this is being developed. I pitched it to DC as something *i want to do* not something they pitched me.

The Warner Bros. is still in the early stages of the DCEU and just now had a film in Wonder Woman, that has universally been liked by critics and fans. A Red Son film doesn’t seem to factor into the universe in the near future but does present and interesting prospect as the DCEU grows. Next up for DCEU is Justice League.
Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Amber Heard as Mera, J.K. Simmons as Jim Gordon, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Julian Lewis Jones, and Willem Dafoe are also set to appear. Here’s the official synopsis:
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
Justice League hits theaters November 17, 2017.
