The Netflix Marvel team-up series The Defenders is only about midway through production on its first season but already the stars are looking ahead in hopes for a potential second season. In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Jessica Jones herself, Krysten Ritter expressed her interest in continuing forward with a second season because of how fun the experience has been so far:
“It just feels fun. We’re all having a blast. We’re all excited to be working together. It’s fun to see their work, how they work, what their style is, what the integrity of their characters are. We’re all so invested in our characters that everybody just wants everything to be great. With Jessica Jones, I’m in almost every frame of the show. This is spread out so we’re all working about three days a week. We’re all in celebration of that. It’s honestly kind of a dream job. If they want to do a Defenders 2, I’m in.”
An official synopsis has yet to be released but it is known that the series shot on-location in New York City will follow Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) as they put their resources together to take on the mysterious businesswoman named Alexandra, played by Sigourney Weaver.
Showrunner Marco Ramirez has his hands full as bringing together all four of the street-level heroes Marvel has established with their Netflix corner of the MCU is a delicate balancing act. The series itself can’t just be the sum of all these different parts, it all has to add together to create something new and stand out from solo series rather than just being a mish-mash of all the individual flavors if it’s going to continue on for a second season.
Ritter’s own series, Jessica Jones, has officially been greenlit for a second season but when that will actually come to fruition remains a mystery, however, it is possible that it could be shot back to back with The Defenders. In which case, Ritter would then bounce back to back to back between the different Marvel series on Netflix.
