DC Studios co-head James Gunn has shared the first official image from HBO’s Lanterns, giving fans a look at Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as the legendary Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The photo shows both actors in civilian attire, marking a significant milestone as production officially begins on the highly-anticipated DC Studios series.
This first look comes as Lanterns begins production under the direction of James Hawes, with Chris Mundy serving as showrunner for the series. “I was drawn by the challenge and fun of creating something really grounded inside this big, amazing mythology,” Mundy told Vanity Fair. “From the beginning, all we talked about was, how can we take all the things we loved about the source material and turn it into a layered, human HBO drama? Just the idea of trying to pull that off was exciting to me.”
What to expect from the Green Lantern HBO series
Lanterns was one of the first projects announced under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe slate. Gunn described the series as a grounded, Earth-based mystery similar to HBO’s True Detective, with Hal Jordan and John Stewart uncovering a “terrifying mystery” connected to the larger DC Universe. With Pierre set to portray John Stewart, Chandler’s Hal Jordan is expected to play a significant role as his mentor.
As one of the key titles in the new DC Universe, Lanterns will mark a key step in reintroducing Green Lantern to audiences after the 2011 movie, with Chandler and Pierre leading the charge in bringing Hal Jordan and John Stewart to life.
Lanterns does not yet have a release date. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe
