Legendary Officially Confirms ‘Dune’ Sequel For October 2023

Dune: Part Two is officially a go at Legendary.

Legendary has announced that a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is now in development, with the project set to hit theaters on October 20, 2023. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and other key cast members from the first film are expected to return for the sequel.

An adaptatation of the 1965 science-fiction novel by Frank Herbert, Dune opened in North American theaters last week, exceeding expectations at the box office with a $40.1 million debut. The film was available day-and-date on the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max and has so far grossed $223.2 million worldwide against an estimated production budget of $165 million before marketing.

“I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two,” Villeneuve said in a statement. “It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.”

Here is the synopsis for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune:

Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

Denis Villeneuve directed Dune from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem and David Dastmalchian.
