Lilly Wachowski Says ‘The Matrix’ Was Always About The Trans Experience

The director reveals what the film was always about.

The Matrix co-director and writer Lilly Wachowski has revealed that the Keanu Reeves film was always about the trans experience.

The first film in the franchise, The Matrix was a huge success when it was released back in 1999. It would go on to earn over $460M worldwide on a $63M budget and spawned two sequels. While its two sequels were released to significantly less praise, the films none the less cemented themselves as a big part of the action movie landscape of the late 1990s and early 2000s with a fourth film set to be released in 2022.

In recent years, however, new examinations of the story of The Matrix have led some to believe that the Keanu Reeves film was an allegory for the experience of transgender people. In the years since the film was originally released both of the film’s directors, formally known as The Wachowski Brothers, have come out as transgender women. This caused many to take another look at the film and see it in another light, which co-director Lilly Wachowski is now confirming.

Lilly Wachowski isn’t involved in the upcoming Matrix film, having left Hollywood but still is willing to discuss the franchise. While discussing the film, Lilly Wachowski revealed that this was always what the film was about but that the world wasn’t ready for such a movie:

“I’m glad that it’s gotten out that that was the original intention but the world wasn’t quite ready-the corporate world wasn’t ready for it so.”

The Matrix and its two sequels collectively earned a total of $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss portrayed Neo and Trinity, respectively, in all three chapters of the film series, each of which were directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski.

Directed by Lana Wachowski from a script she co-wrote with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchel, the upcoming sequel, The Matrix 4 stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Eréndira Ibarra, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra, Andrew Caldwell, and Brian J. Smith.

The Matrix 4 is currently set to hit theaters on April 1, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on The Matrix and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
