‘Logan’ Director James Mangold On The Potential Return Of X-23

'Logan' director James Mangold praises actress Dafne Keen and discusses the possibility of future cinematic appearances by X-23.

While much of the discussion on Logan has been focused on the fact that it will be Hugh Jackman’s final time playing the titular hero, the film will also introduce audiences to a brand new character: Dafne Keen’s Laura Kinney, a.k.a. X-23. Though the film is still a little over a week away from hitting theaters, fans are already speculating on the future of the character as a potential successor to Jackman’s Wolverine in the X-Men film series. In a Facebook Live Q&A session with stars Jackman and Patrick Stewart, who returns as Charles Xavier, director James Mangold discussed the possibility a further cinematic appearances by X-23.

When asked if fans can expect a spin-off film featuring X-23, Mangold was not certain but explained that he would be surprised if there was not at least a discussion on exploring the character further.

“Expect is a big word. I think Dafne is a remarkable actress and I think she does an incredible job with this role. Personally, I would be shocked if we don’t look into trying to develop that character further.”

Keen’s co-stars have already praised her performance as X-23 and if audiences respond to the character as positively as critics have, one can expect fan demand for an X-23 spin-off will only grow stronger.

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young Mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Directed by James Mangold, the film also stars Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Doris Morgado, Stephen Merchant, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Patrick Stewart.

Logan will be released in theaters on March 3, 2017.
