Lucasfilm has revealed Phil Lord and Chris Miller have exited The Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story citing creative differences as the reason for their departure.
The duo became a hot choice after their success directing The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street as well as it’s sequel 22 Jump Street. Initially, Lord and Miller developed the treatment for The Flash at Warner Bros. but ultimately exited the project over creative differences before joining the Star Wars spinoff as directors. Their departure itself comes as a major shock considering principal photography has been underway since the end of January and the project has only three weeks of shooting scheduled left.
President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy released a statement via StarWars.com, assuring a replacement director would soon be announced:
“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon.”
Lord and Miller also released a statement in which they expressed how proud they are of the cast and crew for their efforts on the project:
“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew.”
The Han Solo film is set to chronicle the young smuggler, played by Alden Ehrenreich, from years of 18-24 in his life and will include meeting Chewbacca (Joonas Suotomo) and finding the Millenium Falcon. Kennedy has previously described the film as a western with a color palette influenced by the paintings of Frederic Remington.
The Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story has been written by Lawrence Kasdan and son Jon Kasdan. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as the young Han Solo along with Joonas Suotomo as Chewbacca and Donald Glover as the young Lando Calrissian. The cast also includes Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Michael K. Williams, and Ian Kenny.
The Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story is currently slated for release on May 25, 2018.
