Madeline Brewer, known for her work on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, is interested in portraying Barbara Gordon (AKA Batgirl) in the currently-directorless Batman spin-off. She also throws her support behind Roxane Gay, who wrote for Marvel’s World of Wakanda spin-off to their Black Panther comics, as a potential writer for a script.

Gay threw her hat into the ring following the news that Joss Whedon wasn’t satisfied with the story he was developing for the DC Films project, which is something that a studio’s representative suggested they were open to hearing. It didn’t take long for talent to start noticing Gay’s offer, as Brewer threw her support behind Gay’s pitch and stated that she’s interested, saying the following:

“This. Please. Yes. Also, I think I’d make a great batgirl, no prob. ??”

As it stands, Batgirl is very early in development and there’s not necessarily a solid plan in place for the movie’s story. The studio could look for up-and-coming talent like Brewer or they could look for a more recognizable name like Emma Stone. But in any case, it’s important that the project gets things right, no matter how long this process takes.

Batgirl is in development at DC Films. No release date or director have been selected, but the film is apparently a priority for Warner Brothers and the studio would prefer that a woman directs the film.
