Pop superstar Madonna has confirmed that she turned down the role of Catwoman in Batman Returns.

It’s been rumored for years that Madonna, one of the world’s most iconic musicians, was originally tapped to play Selina Kyle in Batman Returns. Madonna was practically everywhere in the 80s and 90s, which made her a perfect candidate for the femme fatale Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman sequel.

For years Madonna’s supposed casting in the DC film has been maintained as a rumor but the superstar confirmed to Jimmy Fallon that she was once asked to portray Catwoman. She told the late-night host that she regretted turning down the role, “I regret that I turned down Catwoman. That was pretty fierce.” The Catwoman role eventually went to Michelle Pfeiffer., who was lauded for her performance.

Madonna continued by revealing that she turned down two other iconic roles. The “Like A Virgin” singer dropped the news that she was offered the lead role in Showgirls, a film that has gone on to achieve cult status. The star also announced that she was offered a role in The Matrix, ” “That’s like one of the best movies ever made. A teeny tiny part of me regrets just that one moment in my life.” It’s unclear which role she was offered in The Matrix, but it’s likely that she was given the lead role of Trinity, which eventually went to Carrie-Ann-Moss.

Michael Keaton’s Batman is set to return in The Flash.

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash will be inspired by the Flashpoint comic storyline which followed The Flash as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles. It is currently unknown how much inspiration the upcoming Ezra Miller film will take from the comic.
