Mads Mikkelsen Says Johnny Depp ‘Might’ Return To ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Franchise

There would have to be a franchise for him to return back to...

Johnny Depp Mads Mikkelsen Fantastic Beasts Gellert Grindelwald

Mads Mikkelsen looked back on replacing Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and suggested the actor could return.

At the start of principal photography for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Warner Bros. made an unprecendented move and replaced Johnny Depp with Mads Mikkelsen in the role of Gellert Grindelwald due to Depp’s highly publicized legal battles.

Will Johnny Depp Return As Grindelwald?

Johnny Depp went on to win his defamation suit against ex-wife Amber Heard, with the actor doing projects once again following his brief exile from Hollywood. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore earned a modest $400.5 million at the box office, with no word on where Warner Bros. Discovery will take the franchise next. However, if there is another installment, Mads Mikkelsen said on “Coffee With…” that Depp could end up coming back:

“It was very intimidating. Obviously, well, now the course has changed—he won the suit, the court [case]—so let’s see if he comes back. He might. I’m a big fan of Johnny. I think he’s an amazing actor, I think he did a fantastic job. Having said that, I could not copy it. There’s there was no way I could just copy it, because it’s so much him. It would be creative suicide. So, we had to come up with something else, something that was mine, and build a bridge between him and me. So, yes, it was intimidating. His fans were very, very sweet, but they were also very stubborn. I didn’t interact too much with them, but I could understand why they had their hearts broken.”

Here is the synopsis for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore:

Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

Directed by David Yates from a screenplay written by J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves, the film stars Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Callum Turner, Jessica Williams, Katherine Waterston, and Mads Mikkelsen.
