Maisie Williams Says ‘The New Mutants’ Doesn’t Deserve Its ‘Bad Rep’

Wolfsbane The New Mutants Maisie Williams

Maisie Williams addressed the ‘bad reputation’ of The New Mutants caused by a series of delays.

While The New Mutants was initially scheduled to be released in theaters in April of 2018, the X-Men film was delayed twice before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and set the film’s theatrical debut for April 2020. Of course, the frequent delays caused fans to believe The New Mutants was plagued by production troubles and could be lacking in quality as a result, a notion star Maisie Williams does not agree with.

During an interview with the press at Sky’s Up Next event, Maisie Williams addressed the long-overdue release of The New Mutants. Noting that Disney’s acquisition of Fox likely played a role in the delays, Maisie Williams stated that she does not believe The New Mutants deserves the “bad rep” it has received:

“It’s been a long time coming, we shot it many years ago, but I’m really proud of it finally coming out. […] It was a lot to do with the merger, I think it [the film] had a really bad rep and people thought there was going to be something wrong with it, but I honestly think it was just really badly affected by something that was out of our control.

Maisie Williams added that unlike most superhero films, The New Mutants is more of a thriller that will also be relatable to younger audiences:

“There’s so many things about it that are progressive and new for a story of this kind. We’ve seen so many superhero films and I think New Mutants really prides itself on being more of a thriller… we’re not heroes, we’re kids that are trying to figure it all out and I think that’s really relatable to the young people of today.”
