Special Effects Make-Up artist Greg Nicotero has provided an update on Todd McFarlane’s long-delayed Spawn reboot.

It’s been a while since we’ve had any update on Todd McFarlane’s planned Spawn reboot. The film was originally announced back in 2017 and even roped in Avengers star Jeremy Renner and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 actor Jamie Fox to star in the movie. Then the news on the planned film simply stopped being released. While the film is said to still be in active development, little to no news has come out on the planned reboot save for the occasional tease by McFarlane.

While speaking to Comicbook.com, special effects make-up artist Greg Nicotero talked about the inspiration behind the Spawn reboot. While he couldn’t say whether or not the film would ever be made, Nicotero had confidence in Todd McFarlane’s passion in the project and hoped it would see the light of day:

“We have designs … [McFarlane] came in, and he said, ‘Look, we’re doing this thing, and it’s going to be low budget, and it’s kind of down and dirty. And I want it to feel more like the animated show [Todd McFarlane’s Spawn], where it’s like Spawn meets David Fincher.’ He wanted to do this kind of gritty down and dirty thing. And so, we did a lot of concept work here. We did a bunch of design busts and a lot of really, really cool stuff. And then it kind of stalled.

Every once in a while, I’ll reach out and go, ‘Hey.’ I’ll look at the busts in my office and be like, ‘Hey, Todd, what’s going on with this? Are we ever going to make this?’ Because I’m really in love with the design work we did.

Look, I hope it will happen. I know he’s very passionate about it. And look, if you really think about Spawn, Todd McFarland was way ahead of his time, man, way out of his time in terms of what he did with that character. I really do feel that there’s a world where there’s a great Spawn movie out there.”

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot does not currently have a release date. Avengers star Jeremy Renner was originally set to play Twitch with Jamie Fox to play Spawn. Todd McFarlane is set to write and direct the film with Bloomhouse Productions backing the picture.
