When people hear the name Joe Manganiello, they often think of many things; a sexy male stripper (Magic Mike & its sequel), a sexy werewolf (True Blood) and… sexy Joe Manganiello (Pee-wee’s Big Holiday). Manganiello was recently cast as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke. But, according to the actor, he could have appeared in the DC Extended Universe a lot earlier.
In a new interview with MTV, Joe Manganiello revealed that he was in the running to portray Clark Kent/Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Manganiello originally appeared in Sam Raimi’s first and third Spider-Man films as Flash Thompson. The actor’s casting as Deathstroke has been pretty positively – on the grand scale of things. Of course, Manganiello’s involvement in Man of Steel was heavily rumoured before Snyder and co. signed Henry Cavill up. The actor stated:
“I met with Zack. I had an hour and a half long meeting with Zack, which is what was causing all the trouble. … I went ahead and met with casting, and then they all brought me over to meet Zack. I met the producers, I met with Jon Jashni and Thomas Tull at Legendary, I met everybody – everybody involved – and then finally sat down with Zack for an hour and a half and had a big conversation about the character and where it was going, et cetera. Then they called the True Blood costume shop for my measurements to build my suit and that’s what caused – that’s when it stopped.”
Sadly, Joe Manganiello was forced to drop out of the running when HBO – who he was under contract for at the time – refused to let the actor film the huge project. Manganiello was busy working on True Blood, and despite him and his agent’s pleas, HBO did not budge. To be honest, you should not feel too bad for the guy. Manganiello’s casting as Deathstroke is a stroke of genius on Snyder’s behalf, and the actor will kill that role. Hopefully we will get a glimpse of the character in this November’s Justice League.
What do you guys think? Would you have liked to see Joe Manganiello take on the role of Superman? It is quite hard to imagine anyone other than Cavill in the role, to be quite honest.
