Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is so close you can almost taste it. Joining the team in their second outing will be the likes of returning-player Nebula (Karen Gillan) and newcomer Mantis (Pom Klementieff). Even with the second film around the corner, both Gillan and Klementieff are already thinking about where their characters could go in future films.
Given Nebula’s role in the “Infinity Gauntlet” storyline in the comics, Gillan has hope her character will be taking on a similar role in Infinity War.
I, of course, hope so. That would be amazing. When I was preparing to play Nebula the first time, I read the Infinity Gauntlet and I loved it because it was the most Nebula heavy comic. And, yeah, that would be amazing if it does follow that storyline. I’m hoping. I don’t know yet because it’s a very big secret. But I’m hoping.
As for both Gillan and Kelmentieff, they’re on the same page regarding the hope their characters will one day make it to Earth, and there’s something particular they both want to do if they get there.
Pom Klementieff: I would love maybe to go to Earth at some point and go, “Ooo! What is this?”
Karen Gillan: Yeah. That would be cool.
Pom Klementieff: Go do Chuck E Cheese!
Karen Gillan: [laughs] Yeah. Chuck E Cheese.
Apparently, going to Chuck E. Cheese’s is a running joke between the two since neither have been in real-life. When they were told they could only go when chaperoning children, they both had the same reaction:
Karen Gillan: Oh. Do you know any kids?
Pom Klementieff: Yeah. Can we borrow a kid?
Karen Gillan: Yeah. That would be great. I would like Nebula to go to Chuck E Cheese and then take down Thanos.
As for which Avenger Gillan is most-excited to share the screen with? Well, she doesn’t quite know who she’ll meet on-screen just yet but her wish is one shared by some of her Guardians co-stars.
I don’t know who I’m going to be sharing the screen with but, if I could choose anyone, I’d go with Iron Man. Yeah. I feel they would have an interesting relationship.
And while all that sounds great for the future (particularly an epic battle between Nebula and Thanos in Chuck E. Cheese’s), there’s still the present movie to think about. For Nebula, that means a shot at redemption.
I mean, yeah, I feel like we are definitely going to explore more and more with Nebula. I mean, so, in the first movie she was this angry, bitter villain and we sort of understood why, but we didn’t really get into the details. This movie we dive right into it and we know exactly why she is the way she is and I feel like she is definitely going to make some self discoveries through that. You know, she is having quite a cathartic experience with her sister in this movie and I think she is going to get to the point where maybe she’ll get to the good side, but also I kind of want to maintain a little bit about the bad.
And for Mantis, that means her budding friendship with Drax (Dave Bautista).
It’s super cute and I think that James is so good at that because he really created a friendship between a man and a woman and it’s not, they are not going to have sex. They are not going to fall in love. It’s much more interesting in staying platonic and cute, so I like it cause it’s a bigger brother and a sister.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 blasts off on May 5, 2017. The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, and Kurt Russell as Ego.
