Margot Robbie was surprised by how popular Harley Quinn became after the release of Suicide Squad.

Currently promoting her next Harley Quinn outing in Birds of Prey, Margot Robbie discussed how she was surprised by how popular the character became after Suicide Squad came out. Speaking with BBC Radio 1, Margot Robbie discussed how she first got the role of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.

“It’s so funny because when I signed on to play Harley Quinn, there wasn’t a script yet for Suicide SquadAnd all that I was really going off of was a Skype conversation with David Ayer and he had described two scenes he had in his head and I loved the idea of them. They just sounded so cool and bizarre. I really was picturing it as being a much smaller film that was going to get very little attention, especially since it was going to be a squad of people. Life changed pretty quickly.”

Margot Robbie’s life certainly did change for the better as she’s now become synonymous with Harley Quinn. Since Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is the only character from that film to get their own spin-off film. In fact, Margot Robbie will be one of the few retuning members in James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad, which won’t be seeing heavy weights Will Smith and Jared Leto reprising their roles.

It’s quite telling that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn became so popular after Suicide Squad, as her performance was singled out as being one of the best in the film. Suicide Squad was notoriously panned by critics and fans for its shoddy writing and awkward editing, among other criticisms. With that being said, we found Margot Robbie’s outing as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey to be quite the improvement over Suicide Squad, finding the female-driven film to be violently hilarious time.
