Martin Scorsese elaborated on his feelings towards Marvel film’s and whether or not they are true “cinema.”
After Martin Scorsese compared Marvel film’s to theme park rides and argued that they are not real “cinema,” fans started a spirited debate on whether or not the acclaimed filmmaker had a point. Many have argued that while Martin Scorsese and everyone else are entitled to dislike the Marvel film’s, stating that they are not ‘real cinema’ is a stretch considering all film’s technically meet the definition of the term, regardless of quality.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Martin Scorsese expanded on his divisive Marvel comments after being asked if a key scene in his upcoming film The Irishman could survive a big Hollywood studio today. While Martin Scorsese reiterated that he believes the Marvel film’s are ‘theme park movies,’ he acknowledged that many of them are well done at all levels and referred to superhero features a “new art form”:
“The tentpole films, the big comic book films, they’re theme park movies — as well done as many of them are, at all levels. It’s a different cinema form or a new art form entirely. We’re hoping there are theaters that show the films that are not that. And that if they’re not going to show it that filmmakers still have an opportunity with streaming — it changes the experience, but otherwise, in two to three years now, it’s not being done. A good filmmaker comes in from Italy or France comes in, the film has to be a [franchise] or they won’t do it anymore.”
Earlier in the interview, Martin Scorsese seemed to echo to comments made by many who have weighed in on the Marvel debate, saying, “[…] who’s to say cinema is one thing? It’s certainly many different things and right now we’re in a great period of evolution.”
