Martin Scorsese is finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe! The award-winning filmmaker is directing the fifth entry in the Thor series starring Chris Hemsworth.
Much ink has been spilled about the MCU in recent years, with many fans online turning against the media juggernaut due to its supposed degradation of the cinema experience. Chief among these critics has been Martin Scorsese, who was the first big name to speak out against Marvel, calling their movies the equivalent of visiting a theme park.
Yet, now it seems that Martin Scorsese is hopping on the MCU bandwagon! The beloved director will be replacing Taika Waititi as the creative behind the Thor franchise later this year. Scorsese explained that this choice doesn’t contradict his prior statements. Rather, he simply wants to visit the theme park himself.
“I wanna ride the roller coaster,” Scorsese allegedly told an individual familiar with Marvel’s plans. “I just want to have some fun and get a nice, juicy paycheck. We got Al Pacino in there as Mephisto… it’ll be great.”
What Is The Plot Of Thor 5?
The tease of Mephisto making his MCU debut in Thor 5 certainly caught the attention of fans, especially with rumors of Al Pacino potentially taking on the role. At one point, Martin Scorsese was even asked if he had any interest in adapting Immortal Thor for the big screen — a recent Marvel comic with major mythological stakes. Unfortunately, he didn’t offer much for fans to speculate on.
The project is set to have a quick turnaround. Martin Scorsese hopes to push Thor 5 out right after Avengers: Doomsday, release on April 1st, 2026. This gives the director less than a year to film, edit, and distribute the film. However, if anyone has the chops to make the MCU great again, it’s Marvel’s best critic!
