Even high demand from fans couldn’t save Marvel’s Daredevil from being cancelled.
The recent cancellation of Daredevil on Netflix took fans by surprise for a few different reasons. The biggest reason is that the recent third season earned positive word of mouth amongst critics and fans alike, with an ending that perfectly set up the fourth season that the writers had already begun working on.
Another reason that the cancellation was so shocking was that there was a big demand from fans to have the series continue. In a recent report from Deadline, it was revealed that Parrot Analytics had some interesting information regarding Daredevil. According to the report, the inaugural Marvel Netflix series was “ranked fourth last week in viewer demand among all digital originals in the United States across all streaming platforms,” only being topped by fellow Netflix series Narcos, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Stranger Things.
Netflix is known for not being very open with viewership numbers and Parrot Analytics is not directly associated with Netflix, so these aren’t exact numbers from the streaming service. According to the report, this chart looks at “desire, engagement and viewership” to determine the demand for a series.
This specific chart was for the week of December 1st and according to the report, the demand expressions for Daredevil reached as high as 30 million. This figure apparently puts the Marvel series’ demand ahead of the hit Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale, as well as other Netflix productions such as The Last Kingdom, House of Cards, and Orange is the New Black.
