Say what you want about him, but Mel Gibson is without a doubt one of Hollywood’s greatest talents – from acting, directing, you name it. So it’s safe to assume he was considered for some of these big superhero films despite not having appeared in one yet.
In a recent interview with The Guardian for his upcoming movie Blood Father , Gibson was asked about whether or not he was considered for a role in a comic book film, to which he confirmed that he has been considered by Marvel in the past.
Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor’s dad. But I didn’t do it.
Gibson was obviously referring to the role of Odin: the father of Thor and Loki and ruler of Asgard. That role ultimately went to Academy Award winner Sir Anthony Hopkins, who has played Odin in Thor and Thor: The Dark World.
This isn’t the first time Gibson’s name has been tied into Marvel-related stories. Being a close friend to Robert Downey Jr., Downey has expressed in the past how much he would like to see Gibson direct a potential Iron Man 4. Also, Gibson was apparently considered to play Wolverine in the past before the claws were handed to Hugh Jackman.
Gibson also discussed his thoughts on the comic book movie landscape as a whole:
Some are good. Some are kind of funny … ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ Or the first ‘Iron Man.’ And some of them are just like [retreads]. I mean you can watch them do Spider-Man five times … There is a slight shift in film. But, then again, I think all films are suffering from people not being able to now open them with their name. It’s a different kind of business these days.
Are there any roles that you would like to see Mel Gibson play? Personally, he would be my choice to play Cable in Deadpool 2. Imagine the dynamic Ryan Reynolds and Mel Gibson would have. I think he’d be a great fit. Gibson’s next directorial project, Hacksaw Ridge starring Andrew Garfield is set for release November 4.
