Marvel’s ‘She-Hulk’ Almost Featured Tim Blake Nelson As The Leader

We'll have to wait a little while longer to see The Leader again.

She-Hulk Marvel Tim Blake Nelson Samuel Sterns The Leader

The head writer of She-Hulk has revealed that the series could have included Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader.

Tim Blake Nelson made his debut as Samuel Sterns in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, with the film’s ending teasing his transformation into a villainous character known as The Leader. During Disney’s D23 Expo, Marvel’s Kevin Feige announced that Nelson is set to reprise his role in Captain America: New World Order, which is currently slated to hit theaters in 2024.

The Leader almost made his return this year

It’s already been fourteen years since we last saw Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Stens, but it turns out that he almost made an appearance in the Disney Plus seris She-Hulk. During an interview with, She-Hulk head writer Jessica Gao that her initial pitch for the series featured the long-awaited return of Nelson as The Leader.

“In my original pitch, I did have The Leader in there. Just as an option, as a suggestion, you know? But really, I can’t remember why [it was scrapped]. I don’t remember if it was organically taken out, because we just came up with other stuff, or if we were told no. I honestly don’t remember. But there was thought about either bringing him back or doing some version of a new version of Leader, or some relation to him. But, I mean truly, this was three years ago, and the show has evolved so much that I don’t remember what actually happened.”

She-Hulk ended up going in a completely different direction, with Jon Bass taking on the role of the show’s main antagonist, Todd Phelps, the leader of an online criminal organization that uses the name “Intelligencia.” Phelps was arrested towards the final moments of She-Hulk‘s finale.

Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law stars Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, Benedict Wong, Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, Jameela Jamil, Jon Bass and Renée Elise Goldsberry.
